I've owed you guys a follow-up since the Lotus Developer conference two weeks ago.
The conference was a huge success by all reports. In addition to the sessions that I presented, I attended several by other presenters and they were all excellent. One of the benefits of the way that The View does these shows is that the presenters are always people who have actually worked with the prodeucts they're presenting on. no product managers doing slideware presentations ....
Kinda like it.
Anyway, I owe everyone a resources post, and I'll try to get that posted yet this evening.
But, as far as the radio silence, came back from the conference in Las Vegas and found a whirlwind of chaos - started my new job with IBM, had a daughter down with full-blown mono, and my wife jetted off to be with a sister who was in the final stages of losing a battle with leukemia. So, I found my commitment to the 'Unplugged site to be pushed a few steps farther back in line.
So, dealing with things in order, the new job is great, the daughter is feeling better and is now back in school, and the sister-in-law has been released from her misery.

The family has asked that interested parties send donations to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
- Rob

There are a number of stupid sayings that seem to always flutter around ... things like "Never assume ..." (That's usually followed by noting that by breaking up the word "assume" you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me".)
Another of the old salts is to "Never say never."
I was reminded about this "never" business late last week as I heard that RIM was announcing The BlackBerry Pearl, a new BlackBerry device that - hold onto something solid here, please - that has a built in camera and serves as a media player.
And, guess what - the infamous TrackWheel has given way to a 'glowing trackball'!

So, the reason that I am discussing the Pearl under the heading of 'Never say Never' is that I have heard it said a hundred times that RIM would never release a device with a camera on it, much less a media player. BlackBerry devices were, after all, corporate devices. No need for that type of frivilous stuff.
Well, apparently never just expired.
This new device, which not particularly remarkable by cell phone standards, is a complete revolution by BlackBerry standards. Listen to these specs:

Standard BlackBerry features like: Phone, email, SMS, Instant Messaging and Web Browser

Camera

Media Player. Audio and video playback in a variety of formats (MP3, WAV, ACC, AMR, MIDI)

64 MB of memory and expandable memory via microSD card

Dedicated Send, End and Mute keys, a pearl-like trackball navigation system, plus user definable convenience keys

BlackBerry Maps™, the best way to find your way

And so on ....
It's actually a great looking phone, and quite a departure for the folks from Waterloo.
Details HERE.
Nice review of the device from PC Magazine:
Research In Motion (RIM) throws away its suits and ties with the Pearl, a delicious little multimedia smartphone that—surprise!—just happens to be a BlackBerry. Slimmer than a closed RAZR, it is the first BlackBerry to ship with a camera and music/video players. This little gem is guaranteed to become a winner with the young and mobile.

Engadget has the usual review, photos and snarky reader comments ('no wifi - ugh').
- Rob
UPDATE
This just in from BlackBerry. A special edition of the BlackBerry Connection featuring the Pearl. Turns out there's even a dedicated BlackBerry Pearl website.

Interesting article from Information Week about the growing weight of email. Article HERE.
E-mail keeps growing in volume, and so does the urgency for devising new and better ways of dealing with it. A typical office worker receives more than 100 messages a day--some get 200, 300, or more--and may send dozens more. At large companies, it adds up to millions of messages per week and many hours glued to PCs; it also hogs storage and demands hours of administrator and security pro time. E-mail has gotten so big that it's no longer a mere issue of personal productivity. Top executives and their companies are being judged on how they're controlling it, as mismanagement can lead to legal troubles.

Fascinating article.
- Rob

Two interesting 'security issues with mobile devices' issues surfaced and I thought I would pass along .....
First, the folks over at SearchMobileComputing (another of the TechTarget ezines) had an interesting Q&A session regarding a potential vulnerability with BlackBerry.
The problem is, the operating system can be secure, but it's really the user's data and the user's information that sits on top of that, and the applications that they're using, which are at risk. It doesn't matter how secure you can make the OS itself. The hackers aren't worried about bringing down Symbian, they're worried about getting your information and manipulating it to their advantage.
The entire article is HERE.
Meanwhile, ZD Net News published a story about WiFi attacks against laptops.
