Today, John Wargo and I presented the "command performance" edition of our "Domino Mobile" session, but it was also a franticly busy day for your humble narrator, and I don't have the demo database ready to post. The presentation John and I gave is posted below, and please check back for the sample database ...

Meanwhile, I do want to thank the many folks who said kind things about the session that John and I did (or, on Monday, the session I did with Stuart McIntyre). Truth is, we were having as much fun as we appeared to be having ... despite the fact that John was still recovering from pneumonia or bronchitis or something likewise terrible ...

Great time this evening at Disney Hollywood Studios ... kudos to the folks who put all that together ...

BP212 Final.pdf

BP212 Final - r1.pdf

The version marked "r1" is single pages, but both versions seem to be "sideways" and I'm not sure how to fix that. When they launch in Acrobat, simply choose View > Rotate View. Sorry about that ...

I went to check my calendar through iNotes on my iPhone, and it showed up at 10:30 AM on Thursday, not 1:30 PM.

Turns out that, for whatever reason, the iNotes UltraLite version is reading directly from the server's time clock, where as the other clients (Notes itself, plus the iNotes Full and iNotes Lite) do not. In my case, the server I was using was on the west coast.

Turns out (again, as has been reported elsewhere, this is just MY first time through all this) it's incredibly easy to fix. Simply make sure that you set your timezones correctly in preferences:

This causes iNotes to NOT use the server timezone ... and everything is fine!

See, like I said, simple!

- Rob

The week here at ADMIN/LotusDeveloper started Tuesday with what turned out to be a well-attended jumpstart session on web applications.
Do want to pass along my thanks to the numerous people who have sent notes, PMs, Tweets, ST messages (you can usually find me on BleedYellow IM) ...

This is the first time I've ever gone through a "social media job search" and the results are both encouraging and discouraging at the same time. To cut directly to the chase, I'm still not gainfully employed, so I suppose you could build a case for my 'social' approach being unsuccessful. However, that would miss the point.

To date, I have NOT done any "cold calling" type job submittals. I have NOT gone to Monster or Dice or one of those sites and searched for something and then submitted an application.

I have had nearly a dozen "you should check this out" type messages, and I have chased after them, and at this point am having conversations on a couple of those opportunities. So, the value of blogs and Facebook and LinkedIn and Twitter seems pretty clear to me, because that's largely where those messages came from.

So, I'll keep you all posted (but, as I keep telling myself when I don't hear back in what I think is a reasonable amount of time, the urgency here is ALL MINE, not anyone else's) ... hopefully there will be some promising news within the next week or two.

Meanwhile, Boston looms.

One of the main Notes/Domino conferences each year - other than Lotusphere, obviously - is The VIEW's ADMIN / Lotus Developer conference. I've always enjoyed these conferences a lot ... and perhaps the best thing is that 75 percent of the sessions are NOT given by product managers or marketing people from Lotus (not that I don't love all those guys!). They're given by people that actually work day to day with these products. They're given by people that have the scars to show from being 'early adopters.' They're given - in short - by experienced developers and administrators.

I'll be doing three sessions this year, one on Web 2.0 and two involving Domino web development. Two have been turned in; the third is more than half done and due on Monday. So - this weekend is college basketball and presentation time for me.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to shill for The VIEW folks here, but you really should check out the two conferences. They're a lot cheaper than Lotusphere, and it's a great excuse to come to Boston for a week in the spring. In addition to the conference, you can take in all that Boston has to offer - the history, the great sites (we did the "Top of the Pru" last time around), the Ducks, Fenway Park, the great restaurants.

Check out ADMIN2009 and Lotus Developer 2009.

See you there!

I'm constantly amazed at the insights to be found on Seth Godin's blog. Today he was discussing Mark Cuban's offer to fund startups. Seth thought it was an interesting idea, and married it to a post on Samba (his "alternate MBA" program) about 999 business ideas.

A number of people commented on the Samba post - saying that just seeing the list was 'inspiring' - and it is.

Go take a look ... some great ideas.

And, another great example of social software / social networks at work.

As some of you may have seen in my Tweets and Facebook status messages recently, I've been amazed at the power of social networks.

No secret, I'm job hunting. But, what is interesting (especially to me, frankly) is that to date, I've not employed the typical job hunting tools. That is, I have yet to send out a flurry of resumes to every commercial organization in North America. Or post on Monster, CareerBuilder and Fred's Job Hunt and Plumbing Tools site.

Instead, my social network has sprung to life.

I've had dozens - literally - of notes, comments and emails, and have now been asked over a dozen times for me resume, rather than me begging people to take a look at it.

I'm not sure what will happen - no actual 'offers' have materialized yet - but this does feel encouraging. And, uh, should you hear of anything .... well, let me know ...

But, in the meantime, check out the 999 great business ideas ... maybe we should collaborate!

First, the real purpose of this post is to help further broadcast Mitch Cohen's great "Lotus Connections Resources" page.

Mitch (commonly known as Curious Mitch) did an admirable job at Lotusphere this year. Alongside Chris Whisonet, Mitch did a "we can install Connections in Two Hours" show and tell session. They ALMOST made it. Good session - grab the slides while they're still available.

I had tried some time ago to collect some of the disparate resources on Connections. Check here and here. Mitch did a far better job of tracking down all the IBM spots (like all the hotfixes, etc.).

Well done, oh Curious One !!

And, in other news ....

Wanted to say thanks to all the various folks who either left a comment here last week, or sent me emails, or pinged me on Sametime, or Facebook or Twitter or whatever.

Nice to know there are so many caring folks out there.

The net result of all the various messages has not exactly been a flood of job offers yet, but there has been a lot of conversation ... and that's good.

Still looking, and I promise to keep you posted ...

- Rob

Made it back from Lotusphere only to have the rosy glow extinguished fairly quickly when I learned that my position at IBM was among those being eliminated. As many of you are aware, my "day job" had been as an evangelist in the software standards and emerging technology area (and I had been "moonlighting" as the Lotus Connections mobile product manager).

Needless to say, this sure isn't the scenario I would have written - I truly enjoyed what I was doing at IBM, enjoyed working for IBM and thoroughly enjoyed working with all the people I was working with.

So, not happy news.

But, this does give me the opportunity to take a fresh look at career plans, etc., which, I guess, is a good thing.

As anyone who follows this blog is aware, I've had a long-time affection for mobile devices and how to deliver enterprise content to those devices. I did a lot of work in the Domino/Mobile arena, and more recently, had been working with the Lotus Connections team on their forthcoming mobile client (and had presented at Lotusphere on the topic).

I consider myself pretty good at bridging the gap between business and technology, and have played roles such as evangelist, technical sales, product manager, published author, presenter, instructor and blogger / webmaster / wikimaster / social marketeer / community builder. I've even got a few certifications.

And, I'm available ...

If you hear of anything interesting, please contact me: rob at gmail dot com

Thanks, gang.

I'll keep you posted.

Big announcements today from the BlackBerry folks - Jim Basilie actually took a turn on the 'big stage' during the Opening General Session.

But, his presence had to do with some of the big announcements coming from RIM - support for Domino 8.5 (a mere couple weeks after it shipped gold), support for Quickr, and enhancements to the BlackBerry Client for Lotus Connections.

I have the pleasure of presenting with Valerie Wang, RIM's Product Manager for Enterprise Messaging and Collaboration (along with Jon Hale, the development lead for IBM mobile web implementation), and Valerie will be doing a live demo of the enhancements - and they're pretty neat!

Meanwhile, BlackBerry is repeating past performance at Lotusphere, with a significant presence on the exhibit floor, several side events, and a series of "not on the agenda" breakout sessions, like The Future BlackBerry Enterprise Solution, Best Practices for BlackBerry Administrators and BlackBerry Application Development for IBM Lotus Domino.

Most of these sessions take place on Tuesday and Wednesday - so be sure to check the schedule.

The details are all listed in the PDF file attached here: >> UnifyYourWorldBrochure.pdf

And, in the meantime, remember you can find out all about BlackBerry and Lotus Notes at: www.blackberry.com/go/lotusphere
